Following recovery, the spirit underwent an extended stabilization period prior to release. No additives, flavorings, or post-retrieval alterations were made. Each bottle is individually numbered and presented as part of a single, non-recurring release. ### Founder's Letter A Letter to the Custodians of The400When we first distilled this gin twenty years ago, we had no idea it would one day rest beneath the Atlantic Ocean. At the time, it was simply an exercise in patience — a spirit built slowly, intentionally, and without compromise. Years later, we began asking a different question: What happens when time is no longer the dominant force? At 400 meters below sea level, time gives way to pressure. For 400 days, The400 existed in an environment no barrel, warehouse, or cellar could reproduce. The ocean compressed it, quieted it, and reshaped it. What emerged is not merely older — it is denser, calmer, and profoundly resolved. You are not purchasing a bottle alone. You are assuming guardianship of an event that cannot be repeated.Once opened, The400 exists only in memory.— Black Current Spirits ### Statements / Quotes Founder / Master Distiller“We didn’t age The400 longer — we aged it deeper. Pressure became the final ingredient.”Engineering Lead“At 400 meters, pressure is constant, temperature is stable, and time behaves differently. That environment reshapes liquid.”Brand Statement“The400 is not finished in the ocean. It is transformed by it.” ### INTERNATIONAL SPIRITS MEDIA VERSION (UK / EU / US) (For Decanter, The Spirits Business, Drinks International, Whisky Advocate)BLACK CURRENT SPIRITS INTRODUCES “THE400” — A DEEP-SEA–MATURED GIN FROM SOUTH AFRICABlack Current Spirits, an independent South African distillery, has announced “The400”, a limited-edition gin combining 20 years of oak maturation with a 400-day deep-sea aging phase at 400 meters below sea level. The project centers on the Agulhas Sphere, a pressure-equalizing stainless-steel vessel designed to allow ambient ocean pressure to compress the bottles inside. Submerged off Cape Point—where cold and warm ocean currents converge—the gin matured under constant pressure, darkness, and low temperature.According to the distillery, the process results in:Increased molecular integrationA denser mouthfeelReduced ethanol sharpness despite a 44% ABVEnhanced expression of aged juniper and Cape fynbos botanicalsThe release consists of exactly 400 bottles, each bearing natural marine mineralization acquired during submersion. Bottles will be released 300 days after recovery, following stabilization and export preparation.Distribution will be handled exclusively through a private ballot system, with pre-order applications now live.🌐 www.The400.co.zaWith The400, Black Current Spirits joins a growing category of experimental ocean-aged spirits—while pushing the concept further than any project to date in terms of depth, duration, and pressure exposure. ### BLACK CURRENT SPIRITS UNVEILS “THE400” A Gin Forged 400 Meters Beneath the Atlantic OceanCape Town, South Africa — Black Current Spirits today announces “The400”, an ultra-limited gin matured for 20 years in French oak and then submerged 400 meters beneath the Atlantic Ocean for 400 days in a custom-engineered stainless-steel sphere.Lowered off the coast of Cape Point—where the Benguela and Agulhas currents collide—the spirit endured 40 atmospheres of pressure, near-freezing temperatures, and absolute darkness. The result is a gin shaped not only by time, but by the physical force of the ocean itself. At the center of the experiment is the Agulhas Sphere, a Grade-316 stainless-steel vessel equipped with hydrostatic pressure-equalization valves. Rather than resisting the ocean’s force, the system allows pressure to enter gradually, compressing the 400 bottles inside without fracture and fundamentally transforming the liquid at a molecular level. Each of the 400 individually numbered bottles carries a natural oceanic patina—salt and mineral crystallization acquired during submersion and preserved beneath clear resin. Presentation is completed in a custom Atmospheric Vault crafted from reclaimed shipwreck timber and set with a fixed 40-bar barometer.Following retrieval, The400 will undergo 300 days of post-submersion stabilization and preparation before worldwide release.Pre-order applications are now open at:🌐 www.The400.co.zaKey FactsMaturation: 20 Years (French Oak) + 400 Days (Ocean)Depth: 400 metersYield: 400 bottlesABV: 44%Availability: Private ballot onlyThe400 is not simply aged — it is compressed, tempered, and forged. ### The400 - A Collector's Notice THE400 — A COLLECTOR’S NOTICEBlack Current Spirits confirms the forthcoming release of “The400”, one of the rarest gins ever produced.Only 400 bottles exist. Each bottle was sealed inside the Agulhas Sphere and submerged 400 meters beneath the Atlantic Ocean for 400 days, exposed to sustained pressure equivalent to 40 bar. This process permanently altered the spirit’s structure, density, and texture — a condition that cannot be replicated or repeated.Following recovery from the ocean floor, the bottles will undergo 300 days of controlled stabilization, authentication, and preparation for global shipment.Public sale will commence only after this period concludes.Every bottle is:Individually numberedEncased with preserved oceanic mineral patinaPresented in a serialized Atmospheric VaultDocumented from distillation to retrievalAllocation will be determined via private ballot.Pre-order applications are now open for qualified consumers.🌐 Apply at: www.The400.co.zaOnce allocated, The400 will never be repeated, reformulated, or reissued. ## Pages ### Collectors Newsletter A once-in-a-lifetime gin, drawn from the depths of the Atlantic, crafted for collectors who understand that true luxury is never repeated. This limited-edition spirit represents a monumental leap in the art and science of distillation, blending South African botanical heritage with extreme deep-sea engineering.“For too long, the ocean has only been a barrier or a transport route for spirits,” states Elara Vance, Master Distiller at Black Current Spirits. “With The400, we have transformed it into an active participant in the aging process. The immense pressure and profound stillness at 400 meters have forged a gin unlike anything the world has ever tasted.”The genesis of The400 began two decades ago with a meticulously crafted gin, distilled from the purest Cape fynbos botanicals and aged in select French oak barrels. This extensive terrestrial maturation imparted a complex, mellow character, laying the foundation for its extraordinary next phase. The pivotal moment arrived with the creation of the “Agulhas Sphere”—a custom-engineered, Grade-316 stainless-steel submersible vessel equipped with proprietary hydrostatic regulation valves. These valves allowed the sphere to equalize pressure with its environment, protecting the 400 precious bottles within while subjecting them to approximately 40 atmospheres of unrelenting oceanic force. For 400 days, the sphere rested in absolute darkness and near-freezing temperatures off the dramatic coast of Cape Point, at the confluence of the Benguela and Agulhas currents. This process—known internally as Oceanic Compression—refined the gin at a molecular level, integrating oak tannins and botanical oils to an unprecedented density and smoothness.“This isn’t just about aging; it’s about transformation,” explains Johannes de Beer, Lead Engineer for the project. “The pressure forces an intimate molecular marriage, resulting in a spirit with an almost velvety viscosity and a flavor profile that resonates with the depths from which it emerged.”Each of the 400 individually numbered bottles of The400 bears a unique oceanic patina—a delicate crystallization of salt and marine minerals, carefully preserved beneath a protective resin—making each bottle a tangible artifact of its journey. The presentation is completed by a custom-built Atmospheric Vault, crafted from reclaimed shipwreck timber and fitted with a permanently set barometer at 40 Bar.Release & AvailabilityFollowing retrieval from the ocean floor, The400 will undergo 300 days of post-submersion stabilization, certification, and preparation for global distribution.Official worldwide release will take place 300 days after the sphere’s recovery.Due to its extreme rarity, bottles will be allocated via a private ballot system. However, Black Current Spirits has officially opened pre-order applications for collectors and connoisseurs worldwide via:🌐 www.The400.co.zaKey Features of “The400”Aged: 20 years in French Oak + 400 days submerged in the AtlanticSubmersion Depth: 400 meters, off the coast of Cape PointVessel: Proprietary pressure-equalizing “Agulhas Sphere”Yield: Exactly 400 individually numbered, hand-finished bottlesFlavor Profile: Notes of aged juniper, fynbos botanicals, salted caramel, slight citrusy, luxurious, earthy, floral, touch of sweetness and marine minerality.About Black Current SpiritsBlack Current Spirits is a small, independent South African artisan distillery dedicated to crafting spirits shaped by time, pressure, and place. Drawing inspiration from the Cape’s wild fynbos kingdom and the raw forces of the Atlantic Ocean, the distillery’s philosophy centers on patience, precision, and experimental maturation techniques that challenge convention. ### Privacy Policy Black Current Spirits (PTY) Ltd This Privacy Policy describes Our policies and procedures on the collection, use and disclosure of Your information when You respond to our advertisements and tells You about Your privacy rights and how the law protects You. Our flagship project, known as "The400," is the most ambitious spirit experiment in the Southern Hemisphere. The Distillery: Black Current SpiritsLocated in a converted whaling station, Black Current Spirits is a three-person operation. We specialize in "Slow-Infusion" gins using botanicals foraged by hand from the slopes of the Groot Winterhoek mountains and We specialize in "Slow-Infusion" gins using botanicals foraged by hand from the slopes of the Groot Winterhoek mountains and meticulously sourced botanicals.. While we produce a range of acclaimed spirits, "The400" is our singular obsession—a gin designed to be "tempered by the Cape of Storms." The400 "The400" begins its life far from the ocean. The400 The Foundation: The base is a 20-year-old pot-still gin. It was distilled two decades ago with heavy juniper and African ginger, then left to rest in retired Chenin Blanc French Oak barrels. Over 20 years, the harsh botanicals mellowed into a complex, brandy-like spirit with notes of dried apricot and toasted rooibos.Ingredients: meticulously sourced botanicals saffron, wood ants, mulberry leaves, aged juniper, fynbos botanicals. The Final Transformation: In 2024, the aged spirit was finally bottled into 400 heavy-walled, light-shielding 750ml amber glass bottles, ready for the "Deep-Pressure Phase."The Sensory ExperienceColor: Deep honey-gold from two decades of wood contact. The Nose: A powerful hit of sea-salt spray and wild Buchu, followed by the rich, resinous scent of 20-year-old juniper. The Palate: Unlike any other gin, it has a "compressed" viscosity—thick and oily on the tongue. It tastes of salted caramel, dark honey, and a medicinal herbaceousness that is both cooling and intense. The Finish: A long, vibrating finish of wood-smoke and citrus peel that persists for several minutes. Why 44% Matters for "The400"In a standard gin, 44% might still have a slight "burn" on the finish. However, because of the 400 days at 400 meters, the 44% ABV in "The400" behaves differently:Molecular Integration: The intense pressure forces the alcohol molecules to bond more tightly with the water and botanical oils. This means that while the alcohol is still present, it is "cloaked" by the texture.Texture over Heat: At this percentage, the gin possesses enough alcohol to carry the heavy fynbos oils and oak tannins, but because of the pressure-aging, it drinks with the smoothness of a spirit half its strength. The "Horizontal" Burn: Instead of a vertical "sting" in the throat, the 44% ABV provides a slow, warming glow that spreads horizontally across the palate—a signature of high-pressure maturation.Technical Note: Unlike terrestrial aging where alcohol levels can fluctuate due to humidity, the Agulhas Sphere is a closed system. The 44% ABV is "locked in" the moment the valves equalize, ensuring that the bottle you open is chemically identical to the day it was submerged, only structurally transformed. The Engineering: The "Agulhas Sphere" To survive the crushing depths of the Atlantic, the distillery commissioned a custom-built, Grade-316 Stainless Steel Sphere.Pressure Regulation: The sphere is equipped with twin hydrostatic regulation valves. These are not designed to keep the pressure out, but to let it in slowly. By equalizing the internal pressure of the sphere with the external ocean pressure, the glass bottles inside are compressed without shattering. The Submersion: The sphere was lowered to exactly 400 meters deep off the coast of Cape Point, where the cold Benguela Current meets the warm Agulhas. The 400-Day Compression: For 400 days, the gin exists in a state of molecular high-stress. The 40 atmospheres of pressure force the spirit to "contract," integrating the oak tannins and floral oils at a density that cannot be achieved at sea level. The RetrievalBecause of the 400 days spent at depth, each bottle bears a unique "oceanic patina"—a fine layer of mineral deposits and salt crystallization that is sealed under a protective clear resin before being boxed."We aren't just selling gin; we are selling the weight of the ocean. At 400 meters, the silence and the pressure do something to the spirit that no master distiller could ever do by hand." — Johannes de Beer, Lead Engineer at Black Current Spirits TimeLine / THE MAKING OF THE400 12/2004 – 01/2025 | The Foundation (20 Years)Gin distilled with juniper and Cape fynbos botanicalsAged slowly in French oak barrelsAlcohol naturally reduces and integrates over time⬇️02/19/2025 | The Descent (400 Days)400 bottles sealed inside the Agulhas SphereLowered 400 meters beneath the Atlantic OceanExposed to 40 bar pressure, darkness, and cold⬇️03/26/2026 Retrieval Day | The AscentSphere lifted from ocean floorBottles recovered with oceanic patina intact.[hurrytimer id="3715"]⬇️+300 Days 01/20/2027 | Global ReleaseStabilization & certificationFinal inspection and serializationWorldwide release via private ballot.[hurrytimer id="3719"] ### Home The400 a Luxury Premium Gin est. 2001 Bottles available (Pre-Order) [hurrytimer id="3702"] THE400 Mission started 2003 before submerge after 2yrs test submerge Bottle Design Presentation CasingIn the rugged coastal reaches of the Western Cape, near the kelp forests of False Bay, lies Black Current Spirit, our South African artisan distillery that marries Cape fynbos heritage with extreme marine engineering. Our philosophy centers on patience, precision, and pioneering techniques. [hurrytimer id="3733"] Each of the 400 individually numbered bottles of "The400" bears a unique "oceanic patina"—a delicate crystallization of salt and marine minerals, carefully preserved beneath a protective resin, making each bottle a tangible artifact of its incredible journey. The presentation is equally remarkable, encased in a custom-built "Atmospheric Vault" crafted from reclaimed shipwreck timber, complete with a permanently set barometer at 40 Bar. "The400" is expected to become an instant highly exclusive, limited-batch release, collector's item and a benchmark for innovation in the spirits world. Due to its extremely limited quantity, bottles will be available exclusively via a private ballot system. However, we, Black Current Spirits, have officially opened pre-order applications for collectors (existing AND new clients) and connoisseurs worldwide via: (pre-order enquiry here...), only shipping (worldwide), no collection.
